Elevator Shoes vs. Height Insoles: Which Is Right for You?

Elevator Shoes vs. Height Insoles: Which Is Right for You?

If you want to look taller, you have two real options: a height insole that goes inside shoes you already own, or an elevator shoe with the lift built into the sole. Both work. They just suit different people, different shoes and different amounts of height.

We started with height insoles in 2016 and now make elevator shoes too, so here's a straight comparison to help you pick.

The short answer

  • Choose height insoles if you want 0.5 to 2.4 inches, you already have shoes you love, and you mostly wear sneakers, high-tops or boots.
  • Choose elevator shoes if you want 2 to 3 inches, you wear low-cut shoes or dress shoes, or you want height that never shows, even with your shoes off.

How height insoles work

A height insole is a wedge that sits under your heel inside a normal shoe. Ours use a layered design: you stack or remove layers to choose how much lift you get, from half an inch up to 2.4 inches.

What's good about them

  • They work with shoes you already own, so one purchase can go into several pairs.
  • You can adjust the height day to day.
  • They're the lowest-cost way to try added height.

The trade-offs

  • The insole takes up space, so your heel sits higher in the shoe. In low-cut shoes, your heel can start to lift out of the back.
  • More height means less room inside the shoe. Past about 1.5 inches, you'll want a boot or high-top with some ankle height.
  • If someone sees you take your shoes off, they can see the insole.

Good insoles reduce these issues. Look for a firm, shaped structure rather than soft foam, a heel cup that holds your foot in place, and an anti-slip base.

How elevator shoes work

An elevator shoe is built around the lift. Instead of adding a wedge to a normal shoe, the height is engineered into the outsole and footbed, and the shoe is shaped so there's still full room for your foot.

What's good about them

  • More height: 2 to 3 inches, without your heel sitting high in the shoe.
  • The lift is permanent, so nothing can shift, slide or show, even with your shoes off.
  • They work in styles where insoles struggle: low sneakers, dress shoes and Chelsea boots.
  • A well-made pair keeps your foot at a balanced angle, so you walk naturally instead of feeling pitched forward.

The trade-offs

  • They cost more than insoles, because you're buying a complete shoe.
  • The lift is fixed. If you want different heights for different days, you need different pairs.

One thing to watch for: some "elevator shoes" are really a normal shoe with a removable insert. That's an insole with extra steps. If the height comes out, it isn't built in.

Which one should you pick?

You're new to added height. Start with insoles. They're the easiest way to find out how much lift feels right.

You want 2 inches or more. Go with elevator shoes. You get the height without your heel riding up.

You need it for work or formal events. Elevator dress shoes. Insoles rarely fit well in low-cut dress shoes.

You want nobody to ever know. Elevator shoes. There's nothing to find, even at the airport or at a friend's place where you take your shoes off.

You want both. Plenty of men do: elevator shoes for work and nights out, and insoles in their gym shoes and boots.

Common questions

Can you tell someone is wearing elevator shoes?

Not with a well-made pair. Because the lift is built into the sole instead of added on top, the shoe keeps a normal shape from the outside.

Are height insoles bad for your feet?

Most people wear moderate heights comfortably. Start low, build up over a few days, and choose a supportive insole with arch support and a heel cup. If you have an existing foot condition, check with a podiatrist first.

How much height is too much?

For everyday wear, 2 to 3 inches is where most men land. Beyond that, it gets harder to keep a natural walk and a normal-looking shoe.
